Planning Baby Shower Games

Having a baby shower means a lot of fun and non-stop laughter. It can be filled with so many activities to have a fun and lively celebration. Baby shower games are what makes this occasion complete, without it, it will definitely be boring and dull. It needs to be carefully planned to ensure that there will be no interruption of fun. It is also important that you choose the games to be played properly so that every guest would enjoy it and no one will feel out of place. There are a wide variety of games to choose from especially on the Internet. You just need to select what suits the party theme or if you want, pick what baby shower games are popular. But people prefer different types of baby shower games so it is important that you have different games.

Below are some fun games that you can let your guests try.

Bawling Baby- a set of scratch cards will be distributed among guests. There is a picture of a bawling or crying baby on the main card and each guest has to scratch their card to find out who has the item that will make the baby quiet.

Baby Predictions- a set of cards will be distributed to the invitees and will be filled up by predictions like, will it be a boy or girl, what is the baby’s hair and eye color or what will be the birth time and date. The expectant mother can keep it as a souvenir or remembrance.

Baby Animals Game- write at least 10 to 20 names of animals on a sheet of paper then pass around a copy of the list to each guest. Afterwards, ask them to write down the correct names of the animal’s baby in a specified time. The person with the most number of correct answers wins.

Baby Word Scramble- pick at least 10 to 20 words related to babies, gifts or maternity and scramble it. Print out a copy of scrambled words for each attendee, and hand them out. Place a 5-minute time limit and let everyone unscramble as many words as they can. Divide the guests into two and whoever has the most number of correct answers, definitely wins.

Candy in a Bottle- Fill a baby bottle with gummy bears, jelly beans or other candies. Make sure to count it. Let the guests guess how many candies are in the jar. The guess nearest to the total number of candies wins the game. After the game, give the bottle to the new mother as a souvenir or remembrance.

Baby shower games should not eat a lot of your financial resources. Search on the internet since it is free. If the games are selected well, it can make the event very complete. However, when looking for the right baby shower games, it’s important that you have the chosen games related to some baby names of the children in attendance.

Great Baby Shower Games

Whether you are a mother, friend, or expecting oneself, throwing a baby shower should be a fun and stress free experience. Many women (including myself) often worry about making it perfect, ensuring that everyone gets along impeccably, and that there is never a dull moment. This self-imposed stress is unnecessary, however, as the core reason for having a baby shower is to celebrate the expectant mother and the arrival of her beautiful baby. One great way I have found to relieve one’s worries about the shower is to have several great baby shower games planned. Simple yet fun, they keep the mood light and are a great way for all the guests to get to know each other. With just a few supplies, these baby shower games are sure to be a hit!

One great game that starts the minute the guests walk in the door is “No Blabbing Baby”. Before the party, make a necklace for each guest out of yarn and hook ten to fifteen baby pins on each. When each guest walks in, they are adorned with a necklace. The object of the game is to never say the word “baby”, and to have the most pins at the end of the shower. The rules for the game are that whenever someone uses the word “baby”, any other guest who calls them out gets a pin from their necklace. The person with the most pins at the end of the shower wins a prize. This is fun, lighthearted, and really gets all the guests to interact.

Another fun option is “Diaper Deduction”, which brings everyone back to their childhood when they had to guess the number of marbles in a jar. For this game, all one needs is a large clear container and diapers. Fill the container (whatever size you wish) with as many diapers as possible. Have every guest guess how many diapers are in the container! The closest guesser is the winner and receives a small prize, and then the container of diapers is given as a gift to the mother to be. Fun and easy to prepare, it serves the dual purpose of providing the mom-to-be with some much needed supplies.

A big hit which is sure to have all guests laughing has a similar name to the previous game but very different rules. “Dirty Diaper Detective” is hilarious and a continuous source of laughter. The supplies for this game are disposable diapers, a variety of chocolate candy bars, pencils and paper. To prepare for the game, take the candy bars which one has bought (Hershey’s, Milky Way, Snickers, Reeses, etc.) and melt each one individually in the microwave. Then, spoon one melted candy bar into one diaper, until each diaper is filled with a different one. Each guest is given a pencil and paper and using only their senses of sight and smell, must try to guess what kind of candy bar is in each “dirty” diaper. They write their guesses down and the guest with the most number correct wins. The winner receives an assortment of chocolate candy bars…whether they still want to eat them after this game is up to them!

“Baby Who?” is another fun game for baby showers. Have guests each bring in a picture of themselves as a baby. If most guests don’t know each other, just have the mother to be, sisters, mother, and mother-in-law bring theirs. Hang the pictures up together, and draw lines underneath for people to write their guess under of who each picture is. It is a great way to see some cute pictures and get to know everyone!

If you’re hosting a baby shower, you want it to be fun, and picking out party game prizes is probably one of the first things you want to plan out, after the invitations of course. The fun part is that the prizes can double as cheap baby shower favors too, so that’s one of the baby shower favor ideas you can think about when you’re planning out the games and prizes.

A couple of years ago I hosted my daughter-in-law’s shower here was our “game plan” where the baby shower game prizes were a part of the “cheap” shower favors I had for the guests.

Baby Shower Invitations

I printed out my own invitations, which saved a lot of money because I just used postcards. Of course, postcard postage has gone up enough now (in 2011) to not be much of a savings anymore but… anyway…

On the invitations I asked each guest to bring a wrapped gift of any kind, less than $5.00, that would be auctioned off after all the games.

Instead of having to decide what kinds of prizes to give the game winners, I decided to have an auction as the final game. Now, the guests didn’t know what they would be bidding on because the auction items were already wrapped, so that made it a lot more fun! More on that later…

Cheap Baby Shower Favors

The whole idea was to have the best shower possible while spending the least amount of money. So the “goody bags” for the guests were simple.

I shopped locally for everything and found some great deals on discontinued stuff like candy bar wrappers in blue with diaper pins on them. I just ran those through my printer to customize them.

I found the plastic bags at a discount liquidation store so they were only pennies a piece.

And I made custom laminated bookmarks and put one in each bag.

So each “cheap” baby shower favors bag contained:

* Candy bar with a personalized “It’s a Boy” candy bar wrapper
* Baby shower bookmarks
* Some starter Monopoly money for the baby shower game prizes
* And the game cards for the games

Monopoly Money for the Baby Shower Game Prizes
I printed out “baby money” (Monopoly money and I changed the face to a baby LOL). With each game, the winner won a certain amount of monopoly money to be used for the auction.

You can find printable Monopoly money from Hasbro’s website below. If you’re good with a computer or you know someone who is, have them replace the center photo with a photo of a baby or some type of baby item. Your guests will get a kick out of it.

Baby Shower Games

You have to have some games for people to play and win the baby money so they have some baby money to use for the auction. These are pretty traditional, simple games but the one all the guests loved the best was the Baby Price Is Right game. You can get more information on that below too.

The Auction

After all the games were played, my husband became the auctioneer for the wrapped surprise gifts that the guests had brought. Yeah, the ladies loved him and even some of the men came up to watch this game in play. These women were hysterical trying to outbid each other for the gifts. It was funny!! Sisters were “borrowing” baby money from each other and their moms to outbid their cousins. You’d have thought they were at a real auction and the prizes were worth millions.

They had a blast! Afterwards, they all came up to me and said it was one of the best showers they’d ever been to, which made me feel really good because it was the first one I’d ever planned!
